Standards-Based Learning (Outcome-Based / Competency-Based)
Increasingly, curricular trends are moving toward standards-, outcome-, and/or competency-based grading. This is often in relation to Core Curriculum, which tends to leave FLE high and dry. Below are some very useful links for the language educator that is feeling lost in the face of this trend.

ACTFL has put together a document that demonstrates how the 5Cs of 21st Century Language Learning can align with the Core, especially in light of recent ELA Reading and Writing requirements.
Our department here at Grinnell High has begun to work through this document in anticipation of upcoming changes to outcome-based learning. |
Recently, ACTFL and NCSSFL have partnered to generate a series of benchmarks of student ability sorted by ACTFL proficiency level (novice, intermediate, etc.) and five skill sets: Interpersonal Communication, Presentational Speaking, Presentational Writing, Interpretive Listening, and Interpretive Reading.
This also provides a good road map that could be used in anticipation of a transition toward standards-based learning. |
Assessments - FLE
There are many assessments used throughout academia to measure the proficiency of students and educators in varying situations and for varying reasons. Below are materials that might prove interesting in forging a better understanding of those assessments and in preparing students for what they will face.

Considering using a portfolio-based summative assessment strategy? Linguafolio offers guidelines, research basis, and component strategies for creating a very thorough and demonstrative language portfolio.

General Resources - FLE
The Internet is full of great resources for the FL educator. Below are some of the areas that I have visited the most, but it is by no means an exhaustive list! The list will be periodically updated - so keep an eye out!

University of Minnesota - CARLA

UM's Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition offers a wide variety of theoretical and pedagogical support for language teachers looking for a more substantive research base for their practice. There are a lot of good materials here in the resources page, but the site overall offers a lot of quality content.
